The KatCanDo Story

In September 2003 Kate Coles was diagnosed with cancer of the colon. Following operations at Frimley Park Hospital, she had chemotherapy at St Luke’s Cancer Centre in Guildford. While she was having a scan as an in-patient, she overheard the doctor tell a colleague that they did not have use of a certain piece of medical equipment because they could not afford it. It was then Kate decided she should do something something positive with all the goodwill and support from her family and friends, and set up KatCanDo in liaison with Dr Hassan Massouh, Consultant Radiologist at Frimley Park Hospital.

The KatCanDo Charity has been set up to provide funds to help in the treatment of cancer patients under the care of Frimley Park Hospital; St. Luke’s Cancer Centre, Guildford; Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Farnham; and other nearby hospitals dealing with cancer patients, i.e. St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey and North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke.

The aims of KatCanDo are:

  • to assist and contribute to the well-being, health and treatment of all cancer patients regardless of the cancer site or origin
  • to provide funding for diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative equipment and other resources related to cancer treatment that are not automatically provided by the NHS
  • to improve the services needed by cancer patients so that they benefit from the most up-to-date technology, treatment and facilities
  • to provide funding for staff training and teaching aids
  • help to provide amenities for the comfort of cancer patients and the terminally ill patients.

We have received wonderful support so far and are confident that over the next few years KatCanDo can go on to raise a lot of money for this very worthwhile cause.
